Is my grammar correct my paragraph?

Humans are controlled by laws to protect us, without them we are basically savages. William Golding’s Lord of the Flies illustrates English school boys that are cast way on an island, far from civilization. The reader learns the true savage nature of humans when rules and laws are neglected. Golding describes four characters in the novel: Ralph, Jack, Piggy, and Roger. They all have different reasons on how savagery affect them , whether it had to do with the conch, splitting the groups, killing one another, or being blood thirsty. Each character embodies the main difference between civility and savagery.
