Can I update my jail broken iPod touch 1g firmware?

there are a few apps in the app store that i would like to get that are not in installous. the version of my ipod touch is 3.1.3(7E18). and if i am not able to do update the firmware, can i safely unjailbrake my ipod touch and update it and then rejailbrake it.
